Mane’s treble and further strikes from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino saw the rampant Reds stroll to a stunning win which makes the second leg almost irrelevant, and after the match the Senegalese forward thanked Carragher for some half-time advice.
The Sky Sports pundit was pitchside during the match working for Norwegian channel Viasport, and after the game Mane joked about some words of wisdom that he’d received from him.
“He (Carragher) is my good friend,” he told presenter Jan-Aage Fjortoft, “and at half-time he told me to score more goals, and we tried as a team.
“Luckily I got three goals today and I’m happy.”
Carragher’s revolutionary advice paid off as Mane scored twice more in the second half, and the former Southampton man went on to insist that he’s happy playing on the left side of the attack to accomodate Salah.
“I used to play as a left winger, but most of my time in my career I played as a right winger,” he continued.
“For me, it’s good to play on both sides and help the team.”
He went on to add that more praise should be reserved for the rest of the team, not just himself, Salah and Firmino.
“All the time people say about us three, but I think it’s all the team,” he said.
“All the team played a great game today and they make it easy for us.”
